What to Eat Before a Workout?
What to Eat Before a Workout?
We all want to achieve quicker results, whether it be to train harder, run faster, lift heavier or be competitive in our discipline. Sometimes it is easy to overlook the importance of fuelling the body or even know what foods are best. The purpose of a pre-workout meal is to assist energy levels and provide hydration. Eating a carbohydrate rich meal e.g. sandwich, fruit, pasta, cereal or rice 2-4 hours before you start ensures the muscles are toped up with energy. However, it is not always realistic to eat a meal 2-4 hours before training, especially if you train within 1-hour of waking up. If your goal is to increase strength and power, try and have something light between the time you wake up and exercise, foods such as a slice of toast topped with peanut butter, a banana or a fruit smoothie are good options. If you only have a 20-minute window, then a Musashi Pre Workout is an excellent choice. If you are trying to burn fat, training on an empty stomach may have some merit. The rational behind this theory is that ‘fasted cardio’ can help to burn fat faster. Although this method has its perks, it also has its downfalls. Training on empty can increase the risk of early fatigue, reduce motivation and increase unwanted muscle breakdown. Experienced bodybuilders will train in a ‘food fasted state’ but consume a Musashi Pre Workout 20-minutes prior to starting to avoid muscle breakdown and early fatigue.
